Reconnecting with Nature: The Getaway house Experience

getaway house

The calendar immediately presents you with prices per night, and they vary depending on the time of year. Looking at mid-May, you’ll pay anywhere from $399 to $419 a night in Los Angeles—and sometimes you’ll have to book a minimum of a two-night stay. Lesser-busy cities like Nashville start from $99 per night.

The Ultimate Guide for Your Joshua Tree Road Trip

This location is nestled high up in the San Bernardino Mountains and surrounded by giant pine trees everywhere you look. It’s no 5-star hotel, but honestly, that’s what makes it so refreshing. Getaway House has been quickly expanding nationwide since they got their start in 2015. Each Getaway House location is strategically decided so that it is no more than 2(ish) hours outside of any major city, making it easy and convenient to access. Read on for my full review of The Getaway House – what it is, where you can find one, and everything else you need to know about these tiny cabin escapes so you can see whether Getaway is right for you. It’s easy to pound the pavement day in and day out when you live in a busy, bustling city (anyone else live in Los Angeles like me?).

Should I Get A Sustenance Box?

It should go without saying that, yes, there is electricity. That being said, I wouldn’t bring any high-voltage electronics because 1) you’re in a tiny log cabin 2) you’ll probably blow a fuse and 3) you’re supposed to be disconnecting. Cabins are scattered throughout our Outposts, but you’ll be near your neighbors. Please keep your music + voices down, so everyone can enjoy the peace and quiet. If you have the luxury of staying awhile, I suggest booking at least three nights if you’d like total immersion.

Amenities Inside of the Cabin

You can even zipline in the winter months for some special snow-capped scenery, and keep an eye out for the bald eagles that nest here in the cold months. The provisions basket also includes things like hot chocolate, fire starter, coffee, tea, insect repellant, and a s’mores kit. I have to admit it kind of bugs me that coffee isn’t included in your stay, but you could bring your own coffee rig up if you’re a true caffeine snob. Just use what you need (like firewood), and then they’ll send you your tab after you leave.

How long do I have to redeem my packs?

It should go without saying that when there’s a fire ban in place, you absolutely cannot start a fire under any circumstance. If you can recall the forest fire madness of the past several years in California, you’ll understand why this is so important. Keep this in mind if you’re planning on barbecuing on your grilling gate as well. Outside the cabin, you have your own little “campsite” all to yourself, complete with epic views and a private fire pit with a grilling grate. If you want to keep things simple, pack up some steaks or burgers to toss on the grill and pack a few barbecue items to pair it all with.

Getaway House Review: A Tiny Cabin Retreat in the Woods

Nestled in Stanardsville, VA, just 2 hours from Washington, DC., our Outpost offers 2 miles of onsite nature trails that wind along a calming creek and pond. Immerse yourself in nature with stunning forest views of towering sycamore, cedar, and pine trees, or explore the calming waterfalls and waterways of Shenandoah National Park, minutes away. WiFi isn’t available at your cabin, and it’s unlikely you’ll have a cell phone signal. The Getaway House’s tiny cabins at Big Bear are pretty small…just as the name suggests.

Are the Getaway Houses safe?

To help you disconnect, they even offer a wooden lockbox to store your phone for your stay. Of course, this is voluntary, and no one will take your phone from you when you arrive. Last week, the three of us hit the road to spend a weekend in the woods at a Getaway House.

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this is the perfect spot to spend an afternoon sipping local wine while taking in the stunning landscape. This small, locally owned grocery store offers everything — from grilling necessities to toiletries — plus, there's a little deli in the back with the friendliest staff. ©2024 Reviewed, a division of Gannett Satellite Information Network LLC. The beds I’ve slept on at Getaway houses are surprisingly plush.

Where are Getaway Houses Located?

There were also other books for guests to peruse and even sets of Mad Libs. We spent a lot of time chatting and catching up, even though we see each other daily. We also used the fancy vintage-looking Bluetooth speaker while cooking and took advantage of the peacefully quiet surrounds by investing in a few naps. Getaway House recommends traveling light since the cabins are so small.

Some of the best conversations I have ever had with my boyfriend have been had on long camping trips, with a bottle of wine and the campfire stirring just out of reach. Each location has been specifically picked so that you can reach your Getaway within just a couple hours by car, making it easy to break away even if you only have one or two free nights to spare. When I first stayed at the Getaway House in Big Bear in 2020, there were Getaway House locations – known as Outposts – outside of 15 major cities in the US. As of 2022, Getaway House Outposts can now be found outside of 21 major US cities, with 21 total locations you can currently book. There are quite a few hiking trails not too far from the property, all of varying difficulties to accommodate hikers looking for easier or more challenging trails.

As a Black trans man in an interracial relationship, camping might not always feel like the safest or most accessible option. Getaway is making it clear, by giving me this gift, that they are an ally to the LGBTQ+ community and that they take the safety of our community seriously.

There’s a picnic table and chairs for enjoying the fruits of your labor. I should point out that, depending on the season and weather, it can get insanely hot in the cabin during the day. If you get an east-facing cabin like I did, you absolutely will wake up at sunrise, drenched in sunlight, covered in sweat. I recommend bringing an eye mask for this reason as well. Every Outpost location is set up near walking trails or easy hikes, which means you won’t need to rely on your car to explore the area.
